Fairstein, the former Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor whom Felicity Huffman portrays on the Netflix series, wrote in her resignation from the board of the nonprofit Safe Horizon that the four-part series on the five youths wrongly convicted in the Central Park jogger case “depicts me, in a fictionalized version of events, in a grossly and maliciously inaccurate manner." Fairstein generated backlash at the nonprofit because Safe Horizons clients are victims who are mostly minorities. “I do not want to become a lightning rod to inflict damage on this organization, because of those now attacking my record of fighting for social justice for more than 45 years,” she wrote in her letter. Fairstein told the New York Post she sent similar resignation letters to other charities she's involved with, as well as the board of her alma mater Vassar College.
