9-1-1: Lone Star has been given a surprise straight-to-series order for the 2019-20 season. The pickup marks the return to Fox for Lowe, who starred in the comedy The Grinder in the 2015-16 season. 9-1-1 showrunner Tim Minear will also oversee 9-1-1: Lone Star, in which Lowe plays a sophisticated New York cop who relocates to Austin, Texas with his son as he tries to solve his new city's emergency problems. (Lowe recently filmed British crime drama Wild Bill, where he also plays a cop who relocates to solve a new city's problems.) "The beauty of having a hit drama like 911 from the genius minds of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear is it allows you to explore thrilling stories as told through an array of distinctive characters," said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn in a statement. "In 9-1-1: Lone Star, they’ve given us a special opportunity to expand the franchise into new territory — literally and figuratively — and we’re thrilled to have the incomparable Rob Lowe headline this new iteration when it joins our schedule next season."
