This Is Us and The Goldbergs are very popular shows, so why aren't they renewed yet for next season?

  • The fates of The Goldbergs spinoff Schooled and Whiskey Cavalier have also not been revealed with the upfronts two days away. "It is crazy when you think about it but it’s upfront weekend and the biggest series on broadcast television is yet to be picked up yet for next season," says Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "No one doubts that This Is Us will be back on NBC in the fall yet its is quite unusual for a network’s flagship series not to be picked up by end of pre-upfront week. NBC is not alone. One of ABC’s most popular comedy series, The Goldbergs, also is yet to be renewed. It also falls into the no-brainer category yet its pickup has gone down to the wire." Andreeva points out there is a common thread to all these shows not yet renewed -- they all come from outside studios. In This Is Us' case, the tie-up may have been due to ensuring that creator Dan Fogelman would still be on board. He recently signed a massive new deal. As for The Goldbergs, negotiations between ABC and Sony TV have been going on for months. The Whiskey Cavalier issue, meanwhile, is tricky because the big-budget low-rated action drama is more valuable to Warner Bros TV's international sales than it is to ABC.
