The assassination of Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds military Force, took all news outlets by surprise, especially coming soon after the New Year's holiday. This morning, Lester Holt filled in for Savannah Guthrie on Today. Last night, Rachel Maddow returned for a second hour at midnight E.T. to devote extended coverage to the attacks. Sean Hannity, who was on vacation, phoned in to his Fox News show, which former U.S. Representative Jason Chaffetz was guest-hosting. Anderson Cooper, meanwhile, extended his Anderson Cooper: 360 show to two hours.
