The CBS drama was such a hit in its freshman year that it got bigger ratings than This Is Us. Yet Caron, who also created Medium and the critically acclaimed Now and Again, was brought aboard as showrunner to tweak its formula. "It wasn’t like I called CBS and said, ‘I have some things I want to do to a show you have.’ They called me,” he says. Caron adds: “One of the things I enjoy doing is exploring characters and bringing more humanity to things.”
