George Abaraonye, the Oxford Union's president-elect, lost a no-confidence vote due to certain insensitive comments he made about Charlie Kirk. According to the BBC, his remarks seemingly seemed as if he was celebrating Kirk's death. Abaraonye claimed that the poll was "compromised" by "untested" regulations.
As per the Telegraph, he uploaded a message on Instagram that read, "Charlie Kirk got shot loool." For the unversed, "loool" is just an elongated way of writing "lol" that means "laughing out loud." A few messages from a WhatsApp chat were also revealed by The Times that implied that Abaraonye was seemingly being insensitive.
In one of the messages meant for fellow students, Abaraonye wrote, "Charlie Kirk got shot, let's f*cking go." The remarks prompted Oxford Union to issue a statement last month, in which they ended up condemning the comments made by the President-elect. It was further reported at the time that complaints against Abaraonye had been sent for disciplinary proceedings.
According to BBC reports, extraordinary returning officer Donovan Lock published a notice on Tuesday, which stated that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence. According to Lock, 501 votes were against it. It was reported that George Abaraonye faced massive scrutiny for his comments. Last week, Oxford Stand Up To Racism claimed that he was also subjected to racist abuse on social media.
While netizens had bashed George Abaraonye for his comments about Charlie Kirk's death, Kirk's former chief of staff, Mikey McCoy, also had something to say. Last week, on Friday, on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast, McCoy read out an open letter meant for the Oxford Union.
In the letter, he accused the organization of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent."
The letter further suggested that if Abaraonye remained in his position even after his insensitive comments, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name..."
While Oxford Union condemned the comments made by Abaraonye, the organization also called out the racist abuse that he reportedly had been getting online since then. For the unversed, George Abaraonye and Charlie Kirk met each other in May during a debate on toxic masculinity organized by the Oxford Union.
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025, by suspected gunman Tyler Robinson. Following the death, reports of many "celebrating" the tragedy surfaced. According to the BBC, Vice President JD Vance even said that those who celebrated the killing must be held accountable.
While guest-hosting The Charlie Kirk Show, Vance said,
"Call them out, and hell, call their employer. We don't believe in political violence, but we do believe in civility."
People from different professions, like doctors, pilots, and even Secret Service employees, were sacked after their social media comments on Kirk's death were considered inappropriate. Many criticized the firings, including the American Association of University Professors.
