WATCH: The Explosive Trailer for The Crown Season 5 Teases Charles & Diana's Dramatic Divorce

The Netflix original returns November 9.
  • The trailer for the controversial fifth season of The Crown has finally arrived.

"The royal family is in genuine crisis," we hear, as the tension ramps up between Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Prince Charles (Dominic West). As Charles tells the Queen (Imelda Staunton) that he wants a "more modern monarchy", she replies, "I don't think it's my behavior that's threatening its survival."

Charles and Diana's tumultuous public split takes the spotlight in the trailer as he reconnects with old flame Camilla Parker Bowles and a melancholy Diana laments the position the royal family has put her in. "People will never understand how it’s really been for me, I never stood a chance," she says. With glimpses of Diana's bombshell Martin Bashir interview and the revenge dress, the drama for Diana and the rest of the royal family is only just beginning.

Season 5 marks the turnover of another new cast for The Crown, with Staunton taking the reins from Olivia Colman, Debicki from Emma Corrin, West from Josh O'Connor, and Lesley Manville from Helena Bonham Carter.

The award-winning Netflix original has come under fire recently for its allegedly "exploitative" depiction of the royal family. Show creator Peter Morgan and cast and crew members have defended the series, maintaining that the subject matter is handled "with sensitivity".

The Crown Season 5 debuts on Netflix November 9. Seasons 1-4 are currently streaming on the platform.
