Stephen Colbert Goes After Fox News in Live Monologue After Jan. 6 Hearings

Colbert went live after the bombshell January 6 Committee hearing on Thursday.
  • Stephen Colbert went live on Thursday after the January 6 Committee hearing, taking aim at Republicans and Fox News in his opening monologue.

"Republicans tried to claim that tonight was going to be a nothing burger," Colbert said. "They were wrong. It was a juicy double cheeseburger, stuffed with a burger, between two buns made of burger, smothered in a zesty burger sauce."

Colbert also told viewers that Fox News decided not to air the hearing, which was broadcast live on ABC, NBC, CBS, and even far-right network Newsmax, among others. Instead of the hearing, Fox News ran their two evening programs, Tucker Carlson Tonight and Hannity, but entirely without commercials.

"Do you understand what that means?" Colbert asked. "Fox News is willing to lose money to keep their viewers from flipping over and accidentally learning information. I'm really not surprised — that's the first rule of any cult: never leave the compound."

Colbert also played a clip of Ivanka Trump's video testimony, in which she said she believed Attorney General William Barr's statement that there was no widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

"That must have been a bittersweet moment for the former president," said Colbert. "She finally screwed him."

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs at 11:35 PM ET on CBS.
