Wyatt Russell's debut as the new Captain America at the end of the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier lit up the internet with memes about how strange and awkward he looked in that uniform, and he confirmed on Monday's Jimmy Kimmel Live! that the suit itself was "as uncomfortable as I look in it."
Russell also described his first reaction upon seeing himself in the outfit as "Oh god, take it off! You got the wrong guy! Send me back! You're gonna lose so much money!" before adding "honestly, it was like 'how am I gonna act in this thing?'" He then explained that it's "presentational in effect," and thus is designed in such a way as to enforce good posture and make sure it looks cool at the expense of comfort.
Russell also knew absolutely nothing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its complexities before coming on board the project alongside Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. "I didn't grow up knowing much about comic books," he admitted. "My heroes were athletes. So when I came on set, I was asking 'okay, what does that mean? Who's that person? How do they fit in?' and finally Sebastian was like 'dude, stop asking questions, you're gonna get more confused than you are. When you get answers, it's gonna be worse.'"
He also copped to pretending he knew more than he did. "They showed me a picture of the guy, and I was like 'oh, all right! Like, yeah! Uhhh...' and then they start running me through the stuff. 'So you know, when Thanos snaps his fingers...' I'm like 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.' And then finally, about fifteen minutes into the explanation of why I am who I am, I had to look at her and go 'I'm really sorry, I don't know any of this stuff. You have to start from the beginning.' She ran me through it and they were super nice about it... It kinda works for the character because he's new and he's not a part of the old universe or whatever, but it was semi-embarrassing to be in the Marvel office going 'I don't know, I'm sorry.'"
