Ken Burns responds after White House chief of staff said a "lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War”

  • “Many factors contributed to the Civil War. One caused it: slavery,” the documentarian behind PBS' The Civil War tweeted this afternoon following White House chief of staff John Kelly's controversial comments from last night. Burns added in another tweet: “Historian Barbara Fields ended the film: “the Civil War is still going on. It's still to be fought and regrettably it can still be lost.” Burns' tweets come hours after White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended Kelly by mentioning Burns' epic documentary, saying: "I do know that many historians, including Shelby Foote in Ken Burns' famous Civil War documentary, agreed that a failure to compromise was a cause of the Civil War."
