Trevor Noah Mocks Kanye West's New Name: 'The Least Weird Thing He's Ever Done'

  • With Kanye West donning a bizarre white face mask for lunch with Michael Cohen, the rapper's name change has somewhat fallen out of the conversation, but Trevor Noah is more than happy to bring back to the public's attention.

On Tuesday, The Daily Show host devoted a full two minutes of his monologue to Kanye's transformation into "Ye," his new legal name. "I'll be honest, I get why he changed it," said Noah. "I mean, if I had gone super MAGA like he did last year, I also would want to distance myself from myself."

Noah then played a clip explaining that Ye didn't change his name for connivence reasons, but for "personal reasons," namely that "he believes that 'ye' is the most commonly used word in the Bible."

"First of all, I think it's safe to assume that anything Kanye does is for personal reasons. I mean, this man has never uttered the sentence, 'Let's go with whatever's easier for everyone,'" cracked The Daily Show host. "But also, what does he mean that he believes 'ye' is the most commonly used word in the Bible? I know that the Bible is open to many different interpretations... but this particular thing is not a belief. It's something you can count. And 'ye' is not remotely the most common word in the Bible.'"

That said, Noah remains on Ye's side despite the name change. "I know people think he's a strange guy. He wears a mask and he runs around in weird clothing, sometimes," he concluded. "But, yo, changing his name might be the least weird thing he's ever done. I mean, think about it: why should someone else get to choose the thing that you're called?"

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah airs weeknights at 11:00 PM ET on Comedy Central.
