John Oliver Taunts Stephen Colbert About His Live Showtime Election Special

  • On Monday night's Late Show, Stephen Colbert and John Oliver got into a pretend fight over whether or not Colbert was allowed to make a "duty/doody" joke about Oliver getting a sewage treatment plant in Danbury, CT named after him, which led Oliver to go for a low blow.

"It is such a joy being with someone who is at the same level of punchiness as I am right now," Oliver said, commiserating about how tense it is on the eve of Election Day for people whose job it is to pay attention to what Donald Trump does every day. "Although I will say I'm very glad that I don't have to do an hour-plus live show tomorrow!"

Colbert, who is hosting an hour-plus live show on Showtime tonight, had a short response. "F--k you."

Oliver brought up that Colbert did the same thing in 2016. "You did it four years ago, like Evel Knievel wiping out."

"Tomorrow night's just Episode 2 of a two-part series," Colbert explained. "We're just going to start the whole thing with 'Previously, on American Democracy' and then just have a 'now, the exciting conclusion of American Democracy' tomorrow night. All the same guests are coming back. Literally, we invited all the same people back!"

"Wow," Oliver replied. "The string quartet on the Titanic are coming back for an encore!"

Stephen Colbert's Election Night 2020: Democracy's Last Stand: Building Back America Great Again Better 2020  airs tonight at 11:00 PM ET on Showtime.
