TV Brings the Multiplex Home with High-Profile Film Premieres Galore

Bill Murray, Olaf the Snowman and Borat headline a TV movie slate like no other.

    Covid and the ongoing streaming wars have conspired to make this weekend a real barnstormer for movies on the small screen, with Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray reteaming for a sort of spiritual sequel to their 2003 hit Lost in Translation, Sacha Baron Cohen resurrecting Borat for pre-election swing across America, and everyone's favorite summer-craving snowman getting his very own showcase on Disney+.

    Also today: Apple TV+ captures Bruce Springsteen back in the studio with the E Street Band, The Queen's Gambit takes a deep-dive into the world of competitive chess, and How To With John Wilson takes an off-kilter journey through New York City.     ORIGINAL MOVIE: Lost in Translation collaborators Bill Murray and Sofia Coppola reunite in On the Rocks, which follows an aging father as he reconnects with the grown daughter (Rashida Jones) he's reliably let down throughout her life. Watch the trailer. Streaming on Apple TV+

    MINISERIES PREMIERE: Based on the 1983 book of the same name, The Queen's Gambit follows orphan and chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she initially discovers a sense of identity and control in the cutthroat world of competitive chess, but soon finds it is an isolating universe she wishes to escape.     ORIGINAL MOVIE: Netflix is taking the wraps of its original CGI-animated musical Over the Moon today.     SERIES PREMIERE: HBO continues its enduring love affair with New York City with the off-kilter "docu-comedy" How to with John Wilson, in which director and producer John Wilson wrestles with uncertainty while prowling the city's streets, dispensing advice and documenting peculiarities.
