Twenty five years after the original show's debut, creators Christopher Keyser and Amy Lippman have reworked the premise, shifting the show's defining turning point from a fatal car accident to the deportation of parents Javier and Gloria Acosta back to Mexico, leaving their five children behind to care for one another as they struggle to find a way to bring the family back together.
