HBO's Girls Premiered 9 Years Ago Today

  • On April 15, 2012, HBO premiered Lena Dunham's series Girls, which aspired to fill in the storytelling gap between the teen-themed Gossip Girl and the adult-themed Sex and the City, telling tales of twentysomethings in New York City trying to figure their lives out.

In this first scene from the first episode, Hannah Horvath (Dunham) is informed by her parents Loreen (Becky Ann Baker) and Tad (Peter Scolari) that they will no longer be supporting her financially, now that she is two years removed from college and seems to be on a good career track. Hannah's response to this news reveals her trademark immature narcissism and sets the tone for the rest of the series, as she and her friends make mistake after mistake trying to find their directions in love, friendships, and life.

Girls ran on HBO for six seasons, ending in 2017.
